I was surprised to see the price of my favorite brand of free range eggs from Manning Valley selling at double their normal price. Coles is slowly taking out many great free range and organic brands and replacing them with their own crappy tasteless crap brands.

Anyway, here is an email I sent to Manning Valley:

I have always purchased your free range eggs as they seem good quality and the price is competitive but I was shocked when I visited my local supermarket a few days ago. I have always only paid around $3 – $4 for your eggs (12). When I went to Coles here at The Entrance, Central coast NSW they were only selling packs of 6 for about $6 while they had their own brand at just over $3. It is sad to see I can no longer afford these eggs due to Coles aggressive market takeover. I also see many other of my favorite brands have been faded out by Coles and being replaced by their own tasteless replacements.

But Free range eggs are not always what they are marketed to be according to this article from Choice.

According to the Golden Valley UK website:

Recent research amongst 14 flocks by the U.S Dept of Agriculture compared eggs from battery chickens and eggs from pastured chickens and found that when compared to the battery eggs, the pastured eggs contained, on average, four times as much Omega 3, twice as much vitamin E, half the cholesterol and between two and six times as much beta carotene.

I know though that a good brand of free range eggs like those from Manning Valley taste so much better than those horrible caged eggs. We must stand up against the Coles And Woolworths monopoly in this country and let them know that we won’t stand for their selfish marketing tactics and getting rid of the brands we want.

Today I was shopping in my local Coles supermarket and I thought I would buy some canned tuna since it has been some time since I had purchased some. It was a confusing experience since most tuna is now mixed with other ingredients to pimp it up. I did manage to find a couple of tins of plain standard tuna but I was disappointed after reading the label carefully.

Yes every tin I could see was selling crap farmed, supposedly tuna that comes from Thailand. They seem to mainly sell Coles branded tuna while many brands we used to see have all disappeared besides 1 or 2 that I had never heard of but I would expect are some partner of Coles as they also sell only Thailand shit fish packaged as Tuna to unsuspecting Aussies.

Ok, you will see that they also say something about Australia or New Zealand on the tin, probably where the fish was processed and put into the tin but the origin of the fish was Thailand. They also make the print on the label extremely small so it’s very difficult to read.

All I can say is shame on Coles, shame on the Australian Government and shame on consumers who buy this crap. Do You know that your basically eating fish that is grown in the most polluted and environmentally unfriendly places found. I have seen photos of how these fish are grown and it really is quite frighting to think that people would eat this stuff. These places are more like sewers, not places where food is produced.

Here we are in one of the most fish abundant country on earth, with so much fresh and tasty seafood including tuna and all our supermarket can stock is this cheap crap from Thailand that is grown in artificial farms with many chemicals, hormones and artificial food.

We need to make sure that these supermarkets and our politicians know about our disapproval of this situation.

It’s only when we have a number of strong coffees throughout the day that we might be putting too much stress on our bodies with a high amount of caffeine.

So I’m going to show you how you can make up your own simple mix to create a healthier low caffeine instant coffee. None of the following ingredients are organically certified either so you may prefer to replace them with organic products. Organic coffee can be purchased in supermarkets but the other two products might be a little harder to find organic alternatives.

We only need to mix three different products together and these can be purchased to suit your taste with regards to the brand.

Moccana Dark Roast Coffee.
I choose this brand as it seems to taste quite good, it is competitively prices (look out for specials) and you get a well made glass container you can use for food storage when you finish the coffee.

Ecco Coffee Substitute
This cheap caro coffee alternative is made from barley and tastes great

Nestle Alpen Blend Drinking Chocolate
You can use this or Malted Milo also works well

You can mix these into a container using around 60 % coffee, 30% Caro & 10 % chocolate. Test to suit your taste and I would actually recommend to start with higher amounts of coffee until you slowly get used to less coffee in the mix. Before long you will be drinking 50% less coffee per day and your be feeling better for it.

You can now find everything from organic yogurt to organic pasta on display at most Aldi stores. I was even able to find a good quality organic ice cream at one Aldi store but I have not seen it at all of them. Support these supermarkets that stock organic foods and let them know you appreciate them stocking organic foods at affordable prices too.

There are usually only 3 brands of organic full cream milk available in Australian supermarkets. Let’s take a look at them and compare the taste.

Coles Organc full cream milk 1 litre

Homogenized, ultra pasteurized. This milk does not taste too good actually, in fact it tastes like powder milk. Put it in a coffee and it will have a bitter after-taste. I would drink this only if I could not find anything else. The price is the only good thing about this product and the fact it is organic.

Parmalat Pure Organic Unhomogenized Full Cream Milk 1 litre

This milk tastes great, it’s also Unhomogenized which is good. The only problem with this one is that it often has solid bits of cream in it. You can get a 2 litre version which comes in a plastic container and is homogenized so you don’t get the solid bits of cream.

Aldi Just Organic full cream milk 1 litre

This milk tastes very nice although not as good as Parmalat but close. It is also low priced.

This beer is one of the greatest discoveries we have made after trying to find a healthy, organic and eco friendly beer to drink as Fosters had stopped importing the fabulous Mac’s beers from Nelson, New Zealand.

The Cascade Brewery is set in the beautiful and lush Tasmanian wilderness. It’s the perfect place to brew beer. Cascade Green is a full-flavoured, preservative free, low carb, refreshing lager made from 100% pure Tasmanian ingredients, Cascade Green is 100% carbon offset. According to cascadegreen.com.au – The emissions they haven’t already reduced, they have offset through accredited offset programmes. Full details at cascadegreen.com.au

They say that the Cascade Brewery has been committed to reducing their carbon footprint, not just because it’s fashionable but they have been doing this for over 10 years and in the last 6 years the brewery has reduced water usage by 30% per unit of production and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 16% per unit of production.

This relatively new beer is a 100% carbon offset beer. Cascade Green is officially certified by the Australian Greenhouse Friendly Program and has it’s own Emissions Monitoring Plan.

Our own beer fridge contents is currently 100% carbon offset thanks to Cascade Green and it tastes like that too, it’s an amazingly refreshing drink and you have to be careful as it’s easy to just gulp it down as it tastes totally fantastic. If your local liquor store hasn’t got it in stock then tell them to order it and put pressure on them. Give a ice cold bottle to friends and let everyone know this beer is the real thing!

Update: I thought they didn’t sell this great beer anymore as my local shops had not stocked it. I recently moved to Newcastle and it was quite funny as I was browsing the beers at this super liquor store in Stocklands, Glendale in Newcastle when I see some 6 packs of Cascade Green. So I grabbed what was remaining. I then went back a couple of weeks later and only see one box left. I ask the attendant and he tells me they have renamed the beer to be now be Cascade Pure. He pointed me to where I could find the cartons of it. He said it was the same beer, just a different name.

I got home and tried it and it certainly is the same great beer. I prefer the old name and bottle but as long as it’s the same beer and they keep selling it then I’m happy.

It has quite an olive smell to it but it is still Extra Virgin Olive Oil and at that price who cares. You may want to use another less aromatic Extra Virgin Olive Oil in your cooking where the flavour is easily detected but for many common uses it can be a great general oil to use.
